Validate for Confusion

Validation can also be used for confusion.  If a student blows up at you verbally, complement them on it!  “Sarah, this is great that you are able express your feelings like this.  It takes a lot of courage to admit how hurt you are.  Is there anything else you want to get off your chest?”  If she says yes, let her blow herself out then thank her for her input.  You can always go back to the deliberate confusion strategy at this point if the barrage gets personal. “Sarah, you’ve told me a lot of stuff, why don’t you give me a list of my deficits that I can share with administration. Just be careful not to use the colorful language for anything the principal might see.”
